Choosing the right paint colour for your home can greatly impact the overall aesthetics and ambiance.

Remember that paint colours can be changed relatively easily, so don’t be afraid to experiment a bit. Take your time to find the colour that not only appeals to you initially but also works well in your specific space.

Here are some tips to help you make an informed decision:

1. Consider the Mood:

Choosing the Right Paint for your home renovation project

 

Often overlooked is the important of a quality paint product to finish any home improvement project. Whilst budget brands have come along way over the past few years, there is nothing quite like the finish of premium paint – we’ve tried most of them at some point since our company was founded.

When planning home improvements, it is easy to overlook not so much the cost of the paint, but the difference in the labour and work needed to ply different paints properly as it can vary significantly.

Why use premium paint brands such as Little Greene, Paper & Paint Library, Craig & Rose and Farrow & Ball? Premium paints have better quality pigments than less expensive paints. Quality paint has finer pigment particles that provide a richer more intense colour and is a lot closer to the client’s original paint choice than a budget brand.
.Here are a few key points to consider:

  1. What type of room is it?
    You will need to select the appropriate bathroom or kitchen paint versus a  standard product used in all other rooms.
  2. Is this room a busy area? Likely to be scuffed, hand marks, stains from pets or children? We would recommend selecting a stain resistant option or washable such as Dulux Diamond or Johnstone’s Durable for walls.
  3. Are you painting over a dark colour? If yes, then it’s likely that you’ll need several covering coats first to achieve a light colour base.
  4. How do you want the finished product to look and are you looking for something from a semi-gloss, satin, eggshell or a matt flat result? Gloss is the most light reflecting and the matt being the least with shades in between. Generally, ceilings and walls are finished in brilliant white and a coloured vinyl matt emulsion respectively with woodwork being finished in white eggshell (or satinwood) oil-based paint as the standard. Water based paints for woodwork have improved significantly and have the low odour advantage too, but they arguably have less body to their finish that than the oil-based equivalent. Modern gloss white paints tend not to gain a yellowy tinge with age as much as they used to.
  5. Preparation – it’s easy to underestimate just how much care and attention is needed to this part of the project and however good the paint it’s not liable to look good if the full preparation process has not been followed from the outset.

Paper & Paint Library, is a high end designer paint brand.  The Company’s popular products come in five beautiful finishes for interior and exterior projects, they also offer two dedicated primers.  With over 180 shades to choose from, their range boasts 95 “Architectural colours” and 85 “Originals”.

Craig & Rose

Established in 1829, Craig & rose are one of the UK’s oldest paint manufacturers and they are best known for their 1829 Vintage Colour Collection that recreates colours from historic design periods from Art Deco, Victorian, Renaissance and the Ancient World.

Their chalky emulsion is popular for its finish by interior designers.

Farrow & Ball

Around since 1946, this designer brand boasts the finest ingredients and richest pigments.  We like it as the finished product has a stunning ability to bring your walls alive, responding extraordinarily to all types of light, which is often why F&B is favoured by interior designers.

Please note that there are a number of finishes in the range which include: Estate Emulsion, Estate Eggshell, Modern Emulsion, Modern Eggshell, Full Gloss, Exterior Masonry,

Exterior Eggshell, Dead Flat and lastly Casein Distemper.

Mylands

Established in 1884 in South London, Mylands is one of Britain’s oldest family run paint manufacturers.  For over 130 years Mylands has remained one of the best kept secrets of London’s master decorators and interior design specialists.

Their paint has a special blend of china clay and crushed up marble to create their stunning chalky finish.

Mylands have supplied paints for some of Britain’s top 20th century London film studios and sets, including James Bond films, Harry Potter, Downton Abbey and more.

Little Greene

Little Green are an independent British paint manufacturer, specialising in natural paints.  The company’s history dates back to 1773, the Little Greene Dye Works of Collyhurt Wood just outside Manchester.

Early paints would have been natural resins and pigments, similar to that used by some of the iconic artists of the past.  Today Little Greene are still one of the best premium brands for a natural and breathable paint finish, this type of paint can be important for listed building projects.

If you are renovating a listed or historic building watch out for the restrictions in place.  Many historic buildings need a specialist “natural” or “breathable” paint to preserve the building, modern paints can damage the original structure and materials.  Using modern “non-breathable” paints can lead to future problems including damp and physical deterioration.

Making Little Greene even more special, they’ve partnered with English Heritage and the National Trust.  In 2019, they launched their National Trust range featuring 31 colours inspired by properties cared for by the organisation, they also donate paints to the National Trust to help bring colour and life back to some of the nation’s much-loved properties.If you are planning to do work in your home including decorating, then these points are, some to consider and preparation is the real key to a successful result that you will be happy with.

Engineers and servicing companies are often less busy in the summer months as people forget about their heating and furnaces in the warmer temperatures. Come October, they can be quite busy getting homes busy for winter as the cooler weather returns.

This goes for chimneys and fireplaces too, get those cleaned out now so they’re fresh and ready for Autumn & Winter.

Home Renovation Trends: Wetrooms for Your Bathroom

Many home owners are considering creating wet rooms in their homes, versus a traditional bathroom.

A wet room can give your home that little bit of a luxury look to visitors and there’s something that little bit freeing and fun about not being confined to a small box shower or bath tub and the worry of splashing the floor!

What is a wetroom?

Simply put, a wet room is a bathroom that can get completely wet.  It is a fully tiled floor that has been tanked (Waterproofed) instead of having a conventional shower or bath tub.  As the entire room has been tanked, there’s no need for glass screens/shower doors or dividers – the entire room becomes the shower enclosure and a drain on the floor – trends are showing that some home owners do prefer to add a shower panel – to avoid too much splashing across the room.

The cost of a wet room can be in the region of around £5000-£10,000.  If the wet room and waterproofing are not done correctly, water damage repairs can be costly, it is especially important to ensure adequate tanking for flats and apartments.[vc_single_image image=”7710″ img_size=”full”]

There are many benefits to installing a wetroom into your home, here are a few:

    • Space saving – A wet room can help even the smallest of bathrooms feel bigger, by removing an old bath or shower enclosure you open up more space in the room.
    • Easy to clean – with no fixtures in the way you’ll have less hassle cleaning the floor – underfloor heating can also help reduce time spent cleaning!
    • Increased safety factor – special non slip tiles make the room safer than traditional floor tiling.
    • Adds value to your property – Phil Spencer, best known for Location, Location, Location suggests that adding a new bathroom to your home will add an extra 2.88% to the value of it. A wet room is likely to add even more.
    • Makes bathroom more accessible – added tip – pet owners will find it far easier to give the dog a bath in a wet room versus trying to have them stay in the bathtub!
    • Stylish looking and more design options

But won’t it be slippery after a shower?Quite a common thing for people considering a wet room to misunderstand, but wet room floor tiles are infact safer than standard bathroom floor tiling.

A wetroom’s floor features special slip-resistant tiles and fitted level to ensure maximum safety when wet (or dry).

 

Will everything get damp and steamy?

Smaller rooms can be tricky with retaining the moisture, however with good ventilation and extractor fan installed you can easily overcome any potential issues.Challenges and Decisions

There are a few key areas and options to consider when planning a wet room. Whilst some of these aren’t necessary, they are worth thinking about before starting to work as it would be less work to put them in from the beginning, rather than going back to install later on.

Drainage & Tanking

This is vital for any wet room, without adequate tanking and drainage systems in place you risk substantial maintenance and repair costs due to any leakages or water damage.  The costs and plans for this must be added to your plans from the beginning.

You will also need to incorporate a slight gradient into the floor in order to channel any water that escapes the shower or sink area.

Ventilation

As already mentioned above, proper ventilation options are needed for a wet room (or any bathroom in fact), to avoid mould growth and supply a healthy air flow circulation. If the room has no external windows, an extractor fan will need to be fitted to remove the moisture.

Choose your floor tiles

Wet room floor tiles are different to standard bathroom tiling, they have a non-slip coating to ensure safety when wet.  It is important to get the right type of tiling installed to avoid any accidents or injuries – we recommend avoiding high gloss/polished sheen tiles.

Underfloor heating

Whilst underfloor heating isn’t necessary, this added perk to your bathroom has benefits. Not only does it keep your feet toasty warm as you walk barefoot across the tiles – it also helps dry the wet room quicker, meaning less mould risk and less time cleaning the floor.

Underfloor heating should however be decided upon before the project starts, as it is far easier to install at this stage rather than later down the line – and isn’t that much extra work when you’re already waterproofing and tiling the floor.[vc_single_image image=”8943″ img_size=”full”]The importance of tanking your bathroom – (whether you choose a wet room or a standard bathroom).

Tanking can often be missed as a step in installing a new bathroom. Whilst, many home owners have the opinion that if the bathroom is fitted properly tanking would be irrelevant.  However, with the process being fairly inexpensive, it is a worthwhile insurance for the future of your home – should the unthinkable happen.

Another reason, some home owners and/or companies may skip installing the tanking system process in an installation, is they believe that bathroom tiles are waterproof anyway.  Which to a certain level, they can be, however, this can depend on the type of stone used – natural stones are not always waterproof, same goes for grouting which can soak up the water.

So, what is tanking? The simplest explanation is, taking is a waterproof membrane that are fitted beneath the tiles/flooring of your bathroom.  Tanking can come in sheet or liquid form (i.e sheet membrane or a paint on product).

The idea behind the tanking system, is that once it is fitted, the room /area will be water tight, so the background material/surfaces cannot be damaged by any water leakage.

If your shower has mould starting to grow along the grouting lines, chances are your bathroom was never tanked and the water has been absorbed into the grout and the plasterboard has become a breeding ground for mould.

If your bathroom fitter hasn’t suggested tanking – we recommend asking them why before starting any project.

  1. Seek recommendations
    As you would when hiring any tradesman, the first step you should take when looking for a builder is to ask for recommendations.You can also lookat Which? Trusted Traders https://trustedtraders.which.co.uk/for reviews and verified tradesmen.if you’ve already hired an architect or designer for the project – they should be able to recommend a builder they have worked with previously also.
  2. Check their credentials
    Once you have a prospective builder set up, don’t forget to do your due diligence before signing any agreements.You can verify they’re a legitimate registered company by visiting the Companies House website at www.companieshouse.gov.uk and of course websites such as Which? Trusted Trader are a useful resource as above.

 

Ask the builder for information on previous projects, where possible images or a site visit, and access to testimonials or where possible a chance to speak to a previous customer that has a completed job – ideally more than 12 months ago – as it can take a year for the house to settle and any cracks to show.

 

Check also they have they have appropriate insurance to protect against liabilities incase anything goes wrong.

 

This should include:

  • Employers Liability
  • Public/Products Liability
  • Excess Public Liability
  • Contractors All Risk Liability

Your contract should include a payment structure that both yourself and your builder have agreed.

Good practice is usually to offer up to a maximum of 10% up front, followed by payments based on agreed goals reached.  As the stages progress the payments progress.

I.e first payment after the initial groundwork is completed, walls being constructed and so forth.

Look out for a builder who expects you to make a substantial payment upfront. This could be a sign they do not have the cash flow to start the project with their suppliers – or they are planning to take your money and run.

Ensure you get everything in writing, mutually signed and copied and keep everything in a safe place –you may want to consider hiring a project manager to help liaise with the builders and keep track of the progress.

 

4. Check if they employ their workers or subcontract

If you’re using a small to medium sized business they should have 3 or 4 projects on the go at any one time, with at least 2 or 3 full time workers at each site (on average about 10 employees).  If they have less than this, they could rely on heavily  on subcontractors which could put the quality at risk.

However, if they are using subcontractors it’s not always a bad thing, you just need to ensure they have they have all the relevant documents and plans before they begin, and make sure you find out who is responsible should any work be substandard. Also check that the builder will be overseeing the project you have hired them for – if not consider an alternative company or insist on a meeting with the actual project manager to ensure regular communication and checks are being done.

 

5.  Plan ahead and help things go smoothly.

What should your builder need from you?  Good quality drawings and diagrams of the project you want completing, make sure the architect is giving the appropriate detail, specifications and requirements, the more details you provide and fine tune – the more accurate a job the builder can complete.

Recently, many homeowners are switching their bathrooms over from a bath to a shower.  If you are planning a new bathroom and looking for a new shower – here are a few things to consider when browsing home renovation shower and bathroom options.

First thing to consider, what type of water system do you have?

Before buying a new shower, you need to consider the water system already in place at the property. This will affect what models you can select.

For example, an electric shower will work with any water system – but mixer or digital showers need a high pressure water system.

  1. What is an electric shower?

Electric showers are an economical solution – they heat the cold water supply on demand.
As you are only heating the water you need for the shower; you do not waste as much energy.

Benefits:

  • On demand hot water – you do not need to switch on the hot water and wait for the boiler to heat up to take a shower.
  • Fairly Easy and quick to install.
  • Can be economical & therefore good for the environment
  • Can work with a low pressure water system.

 

  1. What is a Mixer shower?

A mixer shower takes both hot and water supplies blending it to the required temperature when needed. They tend to be a little more stylish than the electric shower designs.

Mixer showers are perfect for any home with a hot water supply but work better with a high pressure water system. However, some models are also available to work with a low-pressure water system so make sure you check before buying.

Benefits:

  • Modern designs with advanced functions
  • Look better than electric shower units.

Note to consider: Mixer showers do not have their own hot water supply, so if your boiler is slow to heat up or breaks down – you will be left with cold showers.

  1. What are Power Showers?

Power showers work similarly to mixer showers in that they combine hot and cold water supplies.  However, they differ in that they contain a pump to boost the flow of water through the shower head.  This is a great option for homes with low-pressure water systems.

There are two types of pumps – plastic or metal. Plastic of course is cheaper and can be noisier whilst the metal options are a more expensive but will likely last longer and be quieter.

Benefits:

  • Ideal for low-pressure water system homes
  • Boosts the water pressure for a stronger shower.
  • Combines hot and cold water supplies.

Note to consider: Power showers are a lot more expensive than electric or mixer showers, and they also use a lot more water.  This type of shower costs a lot more to run and uses more energy – therefore is not as good for the environment or your heating/water bills.

 

  1. What are Digital showers?

The latest innovation in shower design, the Digital shower, offers features including precise temperatures and wireless control units that can be installed anywhere in your bathroom.

They work in a similar way as the mixer and power showers, taking water from your hot and cold water supplies but the bonus is you can specifically set the ideal temperature and get it right every time before even setting foot in the shower.

Benefits:

  • Accurate water temperature
  • Wireless access to set temperature before getting in the shower.
  • Control unit can be hidden from sight to help match a sleek bathroom design.
  • Ideal for low pressure systems
  • Often includes a pump turning them into digital power showers.

With 5G now being unleashed, consumers will expect to see a lot more home smart devices controlled by their mobile phones. These devices can allow homeowners to switch on lights from the flick of a button on their phone – without being home.

Previously, this feature was achievable with plug in adaptors – now, many innovative companies are integrating smart technology directly into sockets and switches.

The newest of these has been cleverly enabled to allow for voice control – by your AI voice assistant (from devices such as Google Home or Amazon Echo).  This means that if your phone isn’t in reach, you just need to instruct your digital assistant to make the adjustment for you.  This feature is handy if you forget to turn out the lights downstairs when you’ve gone to bed – just get your phone out or tell your device to turn out the lights! Year on Year the list grows and technology gets better and better!Interchangeable Faceplate Covers

Not interested in USB ports or upgraded tech? Don’t worry you can still get the contemporary, modern and sleek looks for your electrical sockets with interchangeable faceplate covers – which are very on trend this year.

It’s National Sleep Awareness Week this week, so here’s some tips for planning your upcoming bedroom renovations…

 

Paint/Decorate your bedroom with soothing colours.

Your bedroom should be a calm and tranquil space, a place to unwind, choose a calming colour such as lighter shades of purple, or shades of green, or even a light grey would suit a minimalist look – grey can also brighten the room and create a bigger feel for smaller spaces.

 

Invest in a new, good quality, mattress

The bed is probably one of the most important thing’s in a bedroom once you have finished the decorating – how old is your mattress? Maybe it’s time to replace it. Did you know its recommended you replace your mattress ever 7 years – although it might be needed before hand.  A good quality mattress can make a huge difference to your sleep.

 

Add in soothing scents

What’s your favourite soothing scent? One popular “bed time” scent is of course lavender – a great scent for winding down and relaxing.  Whether you add a candle, a wax melt, incence or a diffuser – find a way to add in your calming scents ahead of bed time, so that when you crawl into bed you can really switch off.

 

Consider your lighting options

Does your bedroom get enough natural light? Or is it too bright?

Things You Should Know Before Beginning a Home Transformation Project

Perhaps you’ve found a property in a perfect location but the building needs a lot of work… or repairing and upgrading your existing home to something more modern – a home transformation requires a lot of forward planning, and we’ve got a few tips to help you along the way!

1. Architect drawings are well worth it

You might have an idea already about your dream home, getting an architect at the pre-planning stages is key to a smooth process in the building stages.  They’ll help you reconfigure the space optimally – this will then later on down the line help the builders work more efficiently.

 

2. Hire a specialist Design & Build company for any structural work and extensions. 

By hiring a company, like Red Box, to plan, design & build your conversion, extension or structural changes to your property this can help make the process more efficient.

Most builders and or contractors require direction and instruction, even often the good one. They want to be told what exactly is needed doing and in which order to do so.

Even if you have your own architect or interior designer creating the design plan for the property, you could then hire a project manager and a builder separately – but often this can work out more expensive and will be a lot more work for you, by hiring a Design & Build company – they’ll do everything from scratch to finish, alleviating some of your time to go shopping for décor.

3. What are Power Showers?

Power showers work similarly to mixer showers in that they combine hot and cold water supplies.  However, they differ in that they contain a pump to boost the flow of water through the shower head.  This is a great option for homes with low-pressure water systems.

There are two types of pumps – plastic or metal. Plastic of course is cheaper and can be noisier whilst the metal options are a more expensive but will likely last longer and be quieter.

Benefits:

  • Ideal for low-pressure water system homes
  • Boosts the water pressure for a stronger shower.
  • Combines hot and cold water supplies.

Note to consider: Power showers are a lot more expensive than electric or mixer showers, and they also use a lot more water.  This type of shower costs a lot more to run and uses more energy – therefore is not as good for the environment or your heating/water bills.

 

4. What are Digital showers?

The latest innovation in shower design, the Digital shower, offers features including precise temperatures and wireless control units that can be installed anywhere in your bathroom.

They work in a similar way as the mixer and power showers, taking water from your hot and cold water supplies but the bonus is you can specifically set the ideal temperature and get it right every time before even setting foot in the shower.

Benefits:

  • Accurate water temperature
  • Wireless access to set temperature before getting in the shower.
  • Control unit can be hidden from sight to help match a sleek bathroom design.
  • Ideal for low pressure systems
  • Often includes a pump turning them into digital power showers.
